UK announces further tariff suspensions on food, drink and fuel

Move is the latest "everyday fix" pushed by Chancellor John Healey ahead of the UK budget.

LONDON — The U.K. government is removing import tariffs on more than 100 products, including food, drink and fuel, to ease the cost of living. In a pre-budget announcement on Monday night, the Treasury said it would suspend tariffs on a number of popular food items, including baked beans, chocolate and gherkins, as well as fertilizer and kerosene heating oil. The announcement, which follows a consultation earlier this year, comes after the government said last week that it would suspend import tariffs on over 250 goods that were due to expire on Dec. 31 until Dec. 2028. Collectively, the government said the tariff suspensions would reduce consumer costs by around £245 million to £595 million a year. “Today’s everyday fixes are just a small part of what we are doing to give families a bit of breathing space,” Chancellor John Healey said. “Conflict in the Middle East and Europe is hitting families here at home through higher everyday costs. We can’t control global events, but we can act where we can make a difference.”
