Russian drone hits passenger train headed from Kyiv to Warsaw

BRUSSELS — Russian drones attacked a crossing point on the Polish-Ukrainian border on Sunday morning, hitting a passenger train two kilometers from the frontier in Volyn Oblast. Ukraine’s state rail operator confirmed that a strike hit the locomotive of a passenger train bound for Warsaw. The train crew were warned of the threat in advance by Ukrainian authorities and no one was injured, the operator added. Separately, social media videos showed a large fire at a gas station near the Yahodyn–Dorohusk crossing point between Ukraine and Poland. According to local media, there are no reports yet of casualties from the gas station fire. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha responded to the border strikes with a post on X stating that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s forces are “knocking directly on the doors of the EU and NATO.” “Russian barbarians are at your gate, dear partners,” Sybiha added, urging Ukraine’s allies to “throw the full weight of your sanctions at Putin’s aggressive regime.” Attacks on the EU’s borders have intensified as some intelligence agencies warn of a buildup towards a direct attack by Russia on a NATO member country. Europe faces “an escalating campaign of threats” and “hybrid warfare,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said last month. Russia’s “hybrid war” campaign has also been linked to an explosive-laden drone found near Leipzig airport in Germany, a sea drone later blown up by Romania in the Black Sea, and reports of a Russian plot to assassinate the chief executive of German arms producer Rheinmetall.
